General Society of Colonial Wars

The Society of Colonial Wars was founded in New York in 1892 to further the interest in and study of America’s Colonial history for the period between the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia, on May 13, 1607, and the battle of Lexington on April 19, 1775.

America’s Colonial Period

Why is America’s Colonial period important today? Because of the foundational institutions and civic culture that were laid down between 1607 and 1775. Many of these attributes, such as representative assemblies, freedom of religion, rule of law, freedom of the press, trial by jury, etc., are fundamental to our society as it exists today. It also was an interesting period with competing claims to North America by European powers, wars resulting from great power politics, personal heroism, and a host of colorful characters and events.
